3D Surface Models

By providing a real-to-life view of the finished site, our 3D surface models identify potential problems or inaccuracies in construction plans before they become an issue. This helps speed up the construction process and gives our clients peace of mind that their project will be built as efficiently as possible.

Our 3D surface models provide data for use in machine control and handheld rover systems. We have extensive experience producing models for Trimble, Topcon, and Leica systems.

Our models have been used on small site jobs to simply check grade as well as large freeway projects incorporating miles of machine controlled milling, grading, and concrete paving operations.

Our precise construction take-offs provide detailed quantity and material estimates straight from your plans—helping contractors bid accurately, reduce waste, and keep projects on budget. From site grading to utilities and paving, we deliver the data you need to plan smarter and build efficiently.

Our work is inter-compatible with all major civil software platforms.

3D Surface Model FAQs

  • We will need:

    • A PDF or paper copy of the plans. All our models are checked against the approved construction plans.

    • A CAD based file with applicable references. It’s rare for plans to include enough information to fully lay out a site. We’ll use the design files to create clean, highly usable field linework. Be sure to ask for applicable references. For instance, often a building footprint will be referenced into a base file from another drawing.

    • An existing ground surface. This is not always available and can often be worked around. We also provide surveying services and can create these for you.

  • We’ll take drawing files in any format (dwg, dgn, dxf, etc.).

    LandXML is usually best for transferring the existing ground surface and any other civil design entities (surfaces, alignments, points) that the design engineer is willing to release.

  • It depends on the project. Our process in the office mirrors yours in the field. The larger the job, the larger the model.

  • We specialize in customizing. Give us the specifics, and we’ll incorporate them into our process.

  • No problem. We make model revisions for jobs that are in progress a priority. We are always available to make on-the-fly changes, and you can contact us at any time. Revisions are charged by the hour, and we’re happy to provide an estimate to help with your budgeting.

  • We have a rigorous quality control process in order to prevent mistakes. But we are human and occasionally, we make mistakes. If you find a discrepancy in our model, DO NOT BUILD IT. Please CALL US RIGHT AWAY. We’ll make sure it is correct.
